If you’re a coach trying to grow online, you’ve probably felt it: That moment you open Instagram to post something… and freeze.
You start questioning everything. “Is this good enough? Does it sound like me? Will anyone care?”
You’re not alone. Most coaches overthink content because they care. You want to help people. You want to sound authentic. You want your content to matter.
But if you’re constantly second-guessing every caption, you’ll end up not posting at all. And that means fewer people hear your message. And your coaching business stays stuck.
The good news? You don’t need a huge following, a fancy website, or to spend hours writing perfect posts.
You just need a simple content strategy that helps the right people find you, trust you, and say yes to working with you.
Let’s break it down.
Why Most New Coaches Overthink Content (and What to Do Instead)
Here’s what most coaches get wrong: they think they have to sound like an expert.
But people don’t hire experts. They hire humans. And humans aren’t perfect.
That pressure to sound smart, professional and polished usually leads to stiff, formal posts that feel nothing like you.
And when it doesn’t feel like you, it won’t connect.
That’s why so many coaches end up frustrated, wondering why they’re doing “all the right things” and still not seeing results.
What to do instead: Post like you talk. Write like you would if you were texting a client. Share what you know, how you know it, and why it matters, without trying to prove yourself.
If showing up online brings up fear of judgment, you’re not alone. That resistance is real, and it’s something we talk about often inside Business Breakthrough, our exclusive community for coaches.

The Only 5 Types of Posts You Need
These five posts cover everything you need to build a coaching business online. I use these exact categories on my own Instagram every single week.
They attract the right people, build trust, and make it easy for someone to say “You’re the coach I need.”
Let’s walk through them one by one.
1. Story Posts (for Connection + Trust)
People don’t buy coaching. They buy transformation. And stories are how we show that transformation.
Tell stories that your ideal client can see themselves in.
No matter your coaching niche, ask yourself:
What were you struggling with a few years ago? What have you learned since? What breakthrough changed everything?
You don’t need a “rags to riches” story. You just need something honest. Something real. Show what life looked like 1, 3, or 5 years ago, and how it feels different now.
One of my most powerful examples is a post where I shared a before-and-after photo of myself and opened up about what life looked like 8 years ago: stuck in a 9-5, burned out, and feeling like I had no way out.
That story hit home for so many people who were right where I used to be.

These posts build a connection. They say, “Hey, I’ve been there. I get it. And I can help.”
2. Educational Posts (for Authority + Value)
Think about what your ideal coaching client is Googling right now.
Now answer it.
Teach what you wish your past self knew. Keep it simple, clear and actionable. Show people that you understand the problem they’re stuck in, and that there’s a path forward.
You can also use insights from powerful books you’ve read that helped shift your own mindset or coaching skills.
If something changed your life or business, there’s a good chance it will speak to your audience too.
These posts position you as a helpful guide, not someone trying to sell. And that’s what builds authority.
Examples:
- “3 mindset shifts that helped me break through fear of failure”
- “Why people-pleasing is keeping you stuck (and how to stop it)”
- “The #1 thought that changed how I show up every day”
Want help figuring out what your audience is Googling?
Try using ChatGPT (or another AI tool like Perplexity) to brainstorm search-style questions your audience might have.
You can also explore tools like:
- Google Trends: See what topics are trending in real time.
- Google Keyword Planner: Great for identifying common search terms in your niche.
- Ubersuggest: An SEO tool that offers daily keyword data (limited free searches per day).
- AnswerThePublic: Visualizes questions people ask around a keyword (limited free searches per day).
Use these tools to generate real-world, high-interest topics you can turn into content.
3. Belief-Shifting Posts (for Clarity + Confidence)
Most people don’t need more information. They need to see things differently.
Belief-shifting posts help your audience question what they think is true.
“I thought I had to wait until I felt confident to start. But the truth is, confidence came after I started.”
These types of posts change the way your audience sees themselves, their habits, or what’s possible for them.
If content is bringing up fear, doubt, or perfectionism, you’re not alone. These mindset blocks can quietly hold your business back.

4. Invitation Posts (for Conversion)
You need to make clear offers.
Invite people to work with you, book a call, download a resource, join your challenge, etc.
These might not get the most likes, but that’s not the goal. You’re speaking to the most ready people in your audience, the ones who want to take action.
You can make these posts in Reels, which tend to perform better for reach, or regular static posts, depending on your style.
Examples:
- “I’m opening 3 free calls to help new coaches get clarity. Want one? Comment below.”
- “I just dropped a free resource to help you prime your mindset every morning. Want it? Click on the link below.”
👉 Check out this example where I invited people to download the Morning Mindset Priming Kit. It’s a quick Reel that gets right to the point.
5. Proof Posts (for Social Proof + Trust)
This is where you show it’s working.
Client wins. Testimonials. Personal milestones. Even if you’re just starting out, you can share your own growth.
You might post a screenshot from a client who just signed their first client. Or share a Reel where you talk about a recent breakthrough someone had in your program.
If you’re brand new? Share your journey. Talk about why you decided to become a coach, what challenges you’re overcoming, and how you’re growing.
People don’t need you to be perfect. They just want to see that you walk your talk.
You Don’t Need to Do This Alone
Let’s be real: content strategy can feel like a full-time job. And as a coach, that’s not your job.
